Funds, Scholarships, and Awards

You may apply for scholarships in different ways. There are Animal Science Department scholarships for which you would apply directly through the department.  The campus wide scholarships are administered through the UC Davis Scholarship Office. You must apply using the general scholarship application form and submit a letter of recommendation and essay to the Scholarship Office by early December for the following academic year. Please contact the Scholarship Office for exact date each year. To be considered for the campus wide scholarships, students must have a 3.25 cumulative GPA or above.

 

Animal Science Department Awards/Funds

Educational Enhancement Fund

The purpose of the Educational Enhancement Fund is to encourage and support outside-of-classroom learning opportunities (including internships and Professional/Industry Meetings) for UCD undergraduate students whose majors are affiliated with the Animal Science Department.

All applicants should have demonstrated service to the Animal Science Department.

Applications for funding should be submitted 2 months in advance of when funding is needed.

The deadline for quarterly applications is the first Wednesday after instruction begins.

This is an Animal Science award given to a graduating senior(s) deserving recognition for involvement in various departmental activities. GPA is not a consideration. Recipients receive a certificate and leather piece with our UC brand. Nominations made by students, faculty and staff.

 

Department of Animal Science Spring Scholarships

• James Delfino Family Memorial Award - $1000

• Gifts for this award were made in memory of James Delfino and James G. Delfino, Ph.D., father and son. James G. Delfino was a UC Davis alumnus with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nutrition. His brother Frank is also an alumnus with a B.S. in Nutrition Science. The award is sponsored by the Delfino family.

  Criteria for Award: UC Davis upper division undergraduate students enrolled in a major within the Department of Animal Science or graduate students conducting research with a faculty member in the Department of Animal Science are eligible to receive this award. Preference will be given to students demonstrating interest in production-animal agriculture, including equine. Students who express interest in careers in extension and/or outreach will be given special consideration. The recipient must be in good academic standing at the time of the award.

• Ed DePeters Award - $1000

• Ed DePeters, a professor of dairy nutrition in the Animal Science Department, was awarded the UC Davis Prize for Undergraduate Teaching and Scholarly Achievement in 2009 to recognize his excellence in both areas. Ed is well known for his energy, intensity, and passion for students. The DePeters family generously donated the prize money to the department to fund this award as well as to support field trips for departmental classes.

  Criteria for Award: UC Davis continuing undergraduate students enrolled in a major within the Department of Animal Science are eligible to receive this award. Preference will be given to students demonstrating interest in dairy production or livestock production and who have participated in extracurricular activities related to dairy or livestock. The recipient must be in good academic standing at the time of the award.

• Ian Garnett Memorial Award - $500

• Ian Garnett who was a Senior Lecturer, joined the Animal Science faculty with the charge to develop a professional master’s degree program.  He was instrumental in establishing a joint program with the Department of Animal Science and the UC Davis Graduate School of Management, called the Master of Agriculture and Management degree program.  In addition to teaching a graduate level course, he also taught many of the undergraduate Animal Science courses and was recognized as the Outstanding Faculty Advisor in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.  

  Criteria for Award: The award shall be for incoming or continuing undergraduate or graduate students in the Animal Science Department with an interest in agricultural enterprise management and plans for a career in agribusiness.  The student shall be in good standing and should demonstrate leadership skills as indicated by participation in extracurricular activities.

• Hino/Misawa Companion Animal Award - $1,000

• Criteria for Award: The Award will be given to students in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences who have a declared major in Animal Science with an area of specialization in Companion and Captive Animals. Award recipients must have participated in extracurricular activities related to companion animals.

  The recipient must have a minimum GPA of 3.25 at the time of the award. 

• Lisa Nash Holmes Award in Animal Science - $1000

• Lisa Nash Holmes, the Teaching Coordinator in the Department of Animal Science, received her B.S. and M.S. degrees in Animal Science from UC Davis. Her devotion to the Animal Science Department and her enthusiasm for education have impacted many students over the years. As a result of her love for Animal Science, agriculture, and the great value she places on her educational and life experiences obtained at UC Davis, Lisa established this award to enhance the educational experiences of the student who receives this award.

  Criteria for Award: Continuing undergraduate or graduate students enrolled in a major within the Department of Animal Science. Graduating seniors, who are continuing onto professional or graduate school in the following year, are eligible to apply. Applicants must have a demonstrated and continuing interest in livestock, meat production, dairy, or equine science. In addition, students must have participated in extracurricular activities and have a minimum GPA of 2.5.

• Oskar Lang Laboratory Animal Science Award - $1000

• For 22 years, Oskar Lang was the supervisor of the Animal Science Department’s laboratory animal colonies and a lecturer in Animal Science.  This award is given in his memory and sponsored by the Lang family.

  Criteria for Award: Animal Science undergraduate or graduate students interested in laboratory animal management.

• Gary P. Moberg Memorial Award - $500

• Gary P. Moberg was a faculty member in the Department of Animal Science from 1970 until his unexpected death in 1999.  During the last decade of his career, he developed an internationally recognized program in aquaculture and served as Director of the campus-wide Aquaculture Program.  

  Criteria for Award: Animal Science continuing undergraduate or graduate student interested in aquaculture.

• Ed. F Olivera Sr. Memorial Award 

• This award is not currently being offered.
  
  Criteria: This award will be given to an undergraduate or graduate student pursuing a major in the Animal Science Department or minor in Avian Sciences with demonstrated interest in commercial poultry production with special emphasis in egg production and/or flock health. 

• Frank G. Rue Memorial Award - $14,000 and $8,000

• This award is in memory of Frank G. Rue who received his B.S. degree in Animal Husbandry from UC Berkeley in 1939, after studying at the University farm in Davis. He was a cattle rancher and a well-known horseman.  

  Criteria for Award: This award shall be for incoming or continuing undergraduate or graduate students majoring in an Animal Science curriculum and have a demonstrated and continuing interest in livestock (preferably Beef Cattle). In addition, students should have a demonstrated leadership in extracurricular activities.

  Minimum 2.3 GPA requirement and students must submit 2 letters of recommendation. 

  Graduating undergraduate students are only eligible if they are continuing into the Animal Biology or Avian Sciences graduate programs at UC Davis.
  
  Disclosure: Information on this application for this scholarship will be disclosed to the Rue Family for selection of a successful applicant.

Many of these scholarships are aimed to assist students interested in Animal Science. Selection is based on academic performance, leadership, and promise of future achievement; an essay and letter of recommendation are required. Click here for an application.

• Asmundson Poultry Science Achievement Award
• This is an Avian Science award given to outstanding students in the Avian Sciences program who have an excellent GPA, well rounded interests and abilities, and who make significant contributions to the department and to the campus.
• Carl L. Garrison Scholarship
• Carl Garrison was a prominent rancher and alumnus of UC Davis. He was a past president of the Cal Aggie Alumni Association as well as the California Beef Council. Carl's friends and family established an endowment fund in his memory in 1975, which supports this scholarship. It is given to a junior or senior in the Animal Science Department, who is planning a career in livestock production.
• Elizabeth Graves Hosselkus Scholarship
• Elizabeth Graves Hosselkus graduated from UCD Animal Husbandry program in 1925. Later she was employed by the Animal Husbandry department. This scholarship, in her memory, was established by her husband. It is awarded to a UCD student majoring in Animal Science.
• Harold & Elizabeth Kendall Scholarship
• Harold was a student here at UCD in the early 1920's. He majored in Animal Husbandry because, he says, he wanted to be a cowboy. When he graduated, however, he found a job in the avocado industry. After attending Harvard and acquiring a MBA, he moved to Florida and built a career in citrus and subtropical fruit growing. Elizabeth Kendall graduated around the same time from UC Berkeley in Chemistry. Both are dedicated UC alumni who fly from Florida to visit Davis two or three times a year, even though they are both now in their 90's. Harold holds an especially warm place in his heart for our department. This scholarship is presented to a new or continuing undergraduate student majoring in an animal science departmental major. In addition to academic excellence, preference is given to students demonstrating leadership skills as in extracurricular activities.
• Robert & Dorothy Laben Scholarship
• Robert Laben was Master Advisor for the Animal Science major for about 15 years. His open door policy and rapport with students earned him wide respect from students and colleagues throughout the College. This scholarship is presented to a new or continuing undergraduate student majoring in an animal science departmental major. In addition to academic excellence, preference is given to students demonstrating leadership skills as in extracurricular activities.
• Clement & Jeanne Pelissier Scholarship
• Clem Pelissier was Extension Dairy Specialist at UCD for 32 years from 1950-82. He was well known for his in-depth knowledge of dairy management and the California dairy industry, and for his strong support for UCD and its students and alumni. This scholarship is presented to a continuing undergraduate student, CA resident, majoring in animal science with an interest in dairy cattle or livestock with a preference for dairy, and demonstrated leadership skills (which may include athletics).
• Greta Breedlove Ross Scholarship
• Greta Breedlove Ross and her husband, Robert Wiley Ross were killed in a tragic accident several months after their wedding in 1985. At the time of their deaths, Robert was completing work on his master's degree in Civil Engineering and Greta was completing her Bachelor's Degree in Animal Science. This scholarship was created by their parents, family and friends to commemorate their memory and their relationship with UC Davis. It is given to a senior undergraduate, who is studying Animal Science and interested in animal genetics or related fields.
• Howard and Ida Vaughn Scholarship
• The Vaughns were residents of Dixon and progressive leaders in the sheep industry. Mr. Vaughn served as a president of the National Wool Growers Association. Their fondness for the Davis campus resulted in the establishment of this endowed scholarship program in 1965. It is restricted to students majoring in one of the fields of production agriculture, including agricultural economics.
• Elmer H. Hughes Scholarship
• Professor Hughes was a faculty member and former Chairman of the UC Davis Department of Animal Husbandry. His colleagues, friends, and students contributed to establish this endowment in his memory in 1952. It is restricted to entering freshmen who are studying animal science.
• Lewis Clark Starr Scholarship
• Lewis Clark Starr was a UC Davis student in animal science and agricultural education in the 1930s. He tragically lost his life shortly after the completion of his education in 1939. The endowment supporting the scholarship was established by Mr. Starr's family. Recipients must have a major interest in animal husbandry.

Animal-Related Scholarships

California Cattlewomen's Scholarship

The California Cattlewomen are the women's auxiliary of the California Cattleman's Association. They have provided this award at UCD since 1972. The recipient must be a graduate of a California high school and studying in an agricultural related field under a junior, senior, or graduate college standing. Students must be enrolled full time and have a minimum GPA of 3.0.
