Funds, Scholarships, and Awards

You can apply for scholarships in different ways.  There are Animal Science Department  scholarships for which you would apply directly through the department.  Applications are available to download below.  The campus wide scholarships are administered through the UC Davis Scholarship Office.  You must apply using the general scholarship application form and submit a letter of recommendation and essay to the Scholarship Office by early December for the following academic year.  Please contact the Scholarship Office for exact date each year.  To be considered  for the campus wide scholarships, students must have a 3.25 cumulative GPA or above.

Educational Enhancement Fund

The purpose of the Educational Enhancement Fund is to encourage and support outside-of-classroom learning opportunities (including internships and Professional/Industry Meetings) for UCD undergraduate students majoring in Animal Science, Animal Biology, Animal Science & Management, Avian Sciences, and Non-Majors. 

All applicants should have demonstrated service to the Animal Science Department.                                                                                                        Applications for funding should be submitted 2 months in advance of when funding is needed. 

The deadline for quarterly applications is the first Wednesday after instruction begins.

Criteria:
This award will be given to an Avian Sciences student with demonstrated interest in commercial                                                                                                          poultry production, with special emphasis in egg production and/or flock health.

bulletFrank G. Rue Memorial Award: $5000
Criteria:
This award will be given to a student majoring in an Animal Science curriculum that has a demonstrated                                                                                                   and continuing interest in livestock (preferably beef cattle), as well as, demonstrated leadership in extracurricular activities.

bulletIan Garnett Memorial Award Award: $500                                                                                                                                                                                               Criteria: This award will be given to an undergraduate or graduate student in the Department of Animal Science with                                                                                               an interest in agricultural enterprise management and plans for a career in agribusiness.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            Due May 5, 2008 at 4pm to the Animal Science Advising Center.

Criteria: This award will be given to an Animal Science undergraduate or a graduate student interested in lab animal management.

bulletCalifornia Cattlewomen's Scholarship
The California Cattlewomen are the women's auxiliary of the California Cattleman's Association. They have provided this award at UCD since 1972. The recipient must be a graduate of a California high school and studying in a beef related field. 
Applications available in the Animal Science Advising Center between February and April.  Completed applications due to the California Cattlewomen Association by April 1.

 

bulletDepartmental Citations & Citations for Outstanding Performance
This prestigious award is reserved for students of "true distinction" in recognition of their academic excellence and contributions to the department.  Recipients receive a certificate.   Students must be graduating seniors with a minimum GPA of 3.6 with distinction of contributions to the department.  Nominations are made by undergraduate staff advisor and the Animal Science Scholarship Committee.

 

bulletUC BAR Award
This is an Animal Science award given to a graduating senior(s) deserving recognition for involvement in various departmental activities.  GPA is not a consideration. Recipients receive a certificate and leather piece with our UC brand.   Nominations made by Students, faculty and staff.

Campus Wide Scholarships

Many of these scholarships are aimed to assist students with interests in Animal Science.  Selection is based on academic performance, leadership, and promise of future achievement; an essay and letter of recommendation are required.  Click here for an application:  Application

bulletCarl L. Garrison Scholarship
Carl Garrison was a prominent rancher and alumnus of UC Davis. He was a past president of the Cal Aggie Alumni Association as well as the California Beef Council. Carl's friends and family established an endowment fund in his memory in 1975, which supports this scholarship. It is given to a junior or senior in the Animal Science Department, who is planning a career in livestock production.

 

bulletElizabeth Graves Hosselkus Scholarship
Elizabeth Graves Hosselkus graduated from UCD Animal Husbandry program in 1925. Later she was employed by the Animal Husbandry department. This scholarship, in her memory, was established by her husband. It is awarded to a UCD student majoring in Animal Science.

 

bulletHarold & Elizabeth Kendall Scholarship
Harold was a student here at UCD in the early 1920's. He majored in Animal Husbandry because, he says, he wanted to be a cowboy. When he graduated, however, he found a job in the avocado industry. After attending Harvard and acquiring a MBA, he moved to Florida and built a career in citrus and subtropical fruit growing. Elizabeth Kendall graduated around the same time from UC Berkeley in Chemistry. Both are dedicated UC alumni who fly from Florida to visit Davis two or three times a year, even though they are both now in their 90's. Harold holds an especially warm place in his heart for our department. This scholarship is presented to a new or continuing undergraduate student majoring in an animal science departmental major. In addition to academic excellence, preference is given to students demonstrating leadership skills as in extracurricular activities.

This is an Avian Science award given to outstanding students in the Avian Sciences program who have an excellent GPA, well rounded interests and abilities, and who make significant contributions to the department and to the campus.

 

bulletRobert & Dorothy Laben Scholarship
Robert Laben was Master Advisor for the Animal Science major for about 15 years. His open door policy and rapport with students earned him wide respect from students and colleagues throughout the College.  This scholarship is presented to a new or continuing undergraduate student majoring in an animal science departmental major.  In addition to academic excellence, preference is given to students demonstrating leadership skills as in extracurricular activities.

 

bulletClement & Jeanne Pelissier Scholarship
Clem Pelissier was Extension Dairy Specialist at UCD for 32 years from 1950-82. He was well known for his in-depth knowledge of dairy management and the California dairy industry, and for his strong support for UCD and its students and alumni. This scholarship is presented to a continuing undergraduate student, CA resident, majoring in animal science with an interest in dairy cattle or livestock with a preference for dairy, and demonstrates leadership skills (which may include athletics).

 

bulletGreta Breedlove Ross Scholarship
Greta Breedlove Ross and her husband, Robert Wiley Ross were killed in a tragic accident several months after their wedding in 1985. At the time of their death, Robert was completing work on his master's degree in Civil Engineering and Greta was completing her Bachelor's Degree in Animal Science. This scholarship was created by their parents, family and friends to commemorate their memory and their relationship with UC Davis. It is given to a senior undergraduate, who is studying Animal Science and interested in animal genetics or related fields.
