OVERVIEW OF THE MAJOR
The Avian Sciences major provides opportunities to study
birds in the wild, in the classroom, as well as in a controlled experimental
environment. This program provides students with a diverse science
background emphasizing an understanding of avian biology.
Areas of study include:
-Birds as experimental animals in applies and basic research
-Domestic birds and eggs as sources of high quality food
-Companion birds for recreational uses
-Wild birds and their environments for purposes of
recreation, conservation, and general appreciation
During the first two years of studies, the Avian Sciences
curriculum establishes an excellent foundation in the basic sciences.
In addition, faculty and university extension specialists have a
longstanding relationship with industry producers of domestic and exotic
birds. Exposure to these industries through field trips or special
visits show students the many opportunities available in these fields.
